Many race creation options, including a base race option that can mine the planets it's space stations orbit ( the catch being that they live in space stations and if it's destroyed, kiss your possession of that world goodbye), a race that breeds rapidly (seriously, you can breed and spread like bacteria if you plan it right), and a race with innate stealth, among several others. Playing in huge maps with several hundred stars is carpal tunnel inducing. Not a whole heck of a lot of automation, but what it does have works well enough.

Darn shame, it's sequel 'Stars! Supernova Genesis' was a title I was hungrily looking forward to. It's developer/publisher just went belly up one day and the rights were picked up by someone, I don't remember who, or even if that's still true (you can maybe still buy serial #'s to register it, so it might not be abandonware you can't get legitimately).
